Nursing
was always a dream, never a reality to me. I had always wanted to be in the
medical field but lack of resources and lack of belief in myself led me down a
different path…initially. I’ve been a librarian, business owner, real estate
agent, and cake decorator before I set out to become a nurse. With the support
of family and the aligning of quite a few stars I went to nursing school and
completed my dream of becoming a nurse...on paper. I got my first nursing job
in the local county hospital in the postpartum unit. I learned the ropes, found
my routine, kept my head down, and did my work. However, I wasn’t happy with
that being it. I wanted to be something more; I wanted Advanced Practice and the opportunity to contribute to nursing education. So I
went back to school and became a graduate nursing student. As a grad student I soon realized the endless possibilities that exist for
masters prepared nurses. With the prospect of a project, or thesis in the works,
I soon realized that my job in the county hospital would not provide the opportunities
I was looking for. I wanted more…more autonomy, more connection, and more
opportunities. With that in mind, I found the best kept secret in
nursing…School Nursing!
While making the decision to go into school nursing, I heard it all. “You’ll lose your skills”, “You’ll get bored”, “At least it’s not critical care”, and my favorite “You’re going to have it easy now”. To all of those who think that’s the truth, you can forget about it! School nursing has been one of the most challenging, thought provoking, most critical, and most compassionate things I’ve done in my professional nursing career. I’m still learning, and experimenting and finding my
strengths and weaknesses, but overall I feel like I’m making a difference. I'm finding my niche with technology in nursing and
I finally feel that I’m in a place where I’m going to be able to spread my
wings and be allowed the opportunity to become a Nurse Educator.
